The Extreme Weather Response helps protect people experiencing homelessness by activating targeted supports during dangerous weather conditions, including extra outreach, emergency accommodation options, and essential supplies such as water, food, blankets, and sun protection. The response is coordinated across government and homelessness services to reduce risk and ensure people can access safety during extreme conditions.

- Code Red activation (extreme heat events)

- Code Blue activation (extreme cold, rain, and winter conditions)

- Severe Weather Response (storms, flooding, damaging winds, hail)

- Outreach and welfare checks for people sleeping rough

When the codes activate

- Code Red: Activated during forecast severe or extreme heatwaves, typically based on the Excess Heat Factor (EHF) and multi-day temperature risk.

- Code Blue: Activated during extreme cold, heavy rain, storms, or other dangerous winter weather conditions.

- Severe Weather Response: Activated during significant weather events such as storms, flooding, hail, or damaging winds.

Activations are determined by the Department of Human Services in collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology and emergency services when weather conditions are expected to pose serious risk to people sleeping rough.
